Laparoscopy is a surgical procedure by which we look directly into the abdominal cavity to evaluate the pelvic organs. This is accomplished under anesthesia by introducing a narrow scope through a very small incision in the abdominal wall. Additional incisions are required to insert the instruments used to correct any abnormalities found. Laparoscopy can be both diagnostic and therapeutic because we can usually correct or improve any abnormalities found during the procedure. The surgery is outpatient but requires general anesthesia and a couple of days to recuperate before returning to work.

Laparoscopy remains an essential procedure when other medical treatments fail or when IVF is not part of the treatment plan. Laparoscopy is also important prior to IVF if a hydrosalpinx is found by HSG. The hydrosalpinx can be removed or occluded by laparoscopy to improve the probability of pregnancy through IVF.
